Search SunSITE Alberta

This search engine will allow you to search the contents of all the publicly available documents at SunSITE Alberta.

The default search method is to enter one or more search terms in the box below, and they will be combined with an "AND" operator (ie. documents will be found which contain all of the terms you enter).

Search Tips

The most basic search can be performed by entering your search terms in the search box, and pressing ENTER, or clicking on the Search button. The search engine will present you with one or more pages of results. If no matches were found, you will be presented with a few suggestions to help you.

Search Types

The search type is selected by choosing from "AND", "OR", or "BOOLEAN" in the Match menu.

AND

The default search type is an AND search, where all of the words of your query are required to be in the documents found.

Note: Do not include the word "AND" between your search terms, as that will cause it to be added as a further search term itself.

eg. GNU emacs
The search engine returns all documents containing both the words GNU and emacs.

OR

Selecting "OR" from the Match menu and typing two or more words in the search text box causes the search engine to return all documents containing any of the words you entered.

Note: Do not include the word "OR" between your search terms, as that will cause it to be added as a further search term itself.

eg. GNU emacs
The search engine returns all documents containing either of the words GNU or emacs. This will typically return many more results than an "AND" search.

BOOLEAN

Selecting "BOOLEAN" from the Match menu and typing search terms combined with the keywords "NOT", "AND", "OR", or parentheses will result in the most precise search. Case is not significant - you can use any of "AND", "and", or "And" and achieve the same results.

The "NOT" operator is used to mean "WITHOUT", and is binary in nature. You can not type "cat and not dog" or "not dog", but you can enter "cat not dog".

eg. gnu and (emacs or gnus) not vi
The search engine returns all documents containing either of the words emacs or gnus, as well as the word gnu, and that don't contain the word vi.

eg. map* not (gnu or linux or function or program)
The search engine returns all documents containing a word beginning with map (such as mapped, mapping, or maps), but does not contain any of gnu, linux, function, or program.

Results Format

The default output format "LONG" returns a short excerpt from each result document, with the search terms highlighted as links to the result document. Selecting "SHORT" from the Format menu causes the search engine to only output a ranked list of links to the result documents, with no excerpts.

Results Sort Order

No matter which of the Sort by choices are made, the same results of the search will be generated, it just may be easier or harder to find the one you are looking for.

Score

The default sort order is by Score, which means that the results are ranked by best match (relevance). This also produces faster results than the other sort possibilities.

Selecting Time from the Sort by menu sorts the results by modification date of the result files.

Selecting Title from the Sort by menu sorts the result documents alphabetically by title.

Selecting one of the sort methods beginning with Reverse simply reverses the order of the sort.
